How long does it take to setup a new hosting account?

Orders for new hosting accounts received during office hours (8am - 8pm) will be setup within 1 hour. As domain names generally take around 24 hours to configure, temporary server names and website addresses are provided on completion of account setup to allow you to begin using your hosting account immediately. Orders received outside office hours will be processed on the same day or on the following business day.

What security measures are in place to protect my website?

Hacking of web-servers is a very real risk on the Internet. We monitor our servers and continuously log attempts to exploit vulnerabilities in common web-servers. Verrex Communications runs on GNU/Linux based systems, which have a substantially lower risk of being compromised than Windows based servers. All equipment is stored in a secure data center which incorporates 24 monitoring and alarm system, hardware based intrusion detection systems, firewalls, dry head fire suppression systems. The servers are configured to minimise the risk of hacking by running all programs as individual user accounts with only the required privileges to perform the specific function of that program. Bugtraq mailing lists are continuously monitored and all security related patches are meticulously applied to services.

What service level guarantee is provided?

A comprehensive service level agreement (SLA) is provided for all web hosting accounts and can be viewed here. Verrex Communications operates all servers to ensure the maximum uptime possible. From time to time (typically 3-4 times per year) the servers will need to be taken offline to perform system and hardware upgrades. Such upgrades are performed at time of low usage. Redundancies are in place to assist maintain a high level of uptime, RAID drive arrays, redundant power sources, redundant links to the Internet backbone. Uptime for our web servers is currently > 99%.

Can I upgrade to a larger account?

YES! At any time you can upgrade your site to a larger hosting account. We will simply calculate the difference in value for the remaining portion of hosting services which have been purchased and provide an invoice for the difference in value.

What does disk space refer to?

It is the amount of storage space you can use on our servers to hold all (web pages, images and scripts) files associated with your website. It means the amount of space that the files would take up on your computers Hard Drive.

What does data transfer refer to?

Data transfer is the volume of information that is transferred to or from your website. Every time a visitor looks at your website data is transferred.

How much disk space do I need for my website?

Most business website's only need less than 5MB to store all of the files. Remembering that the average user on a 56Kbps modem connection can only download 12MB in 1 hour, if your site is much large than 5MB it will be too slow for people to download.

Most customers purchase the basic account which gives you enough space for your web site as well as your email.

Is 1 GB of data transfer enough?

YES! Only very large or high volume websites will ever exceed 1 GB of data transfer in a month. An average business website would support up to 10,000 different people looking at their website every month and still not exceed 1GB of data transfer! The way we look at data transfer is that, if you ever have to pay for more data transfer your website will be generating so many benefits for your business that it will by far out weigh the cost of the excess data charges.

How is the total data transfer per month calculated?

Total data transfer for your hosting account, includes data transferred via:

  • Web Traffic - Visitors to your website
  • FTP Transfer - Data transferred to/from your site using FTP
  • Email - All email handled by our mail server

'Total data transfer' is the sum of both inbound and outbound data over the mediums listed above.

Multiple sites per hosting Account?

For each hosting account you can only have one website. Each website can have multiple sections, pages etc.

How do I add a database to my hosting account?

In the control panel for your account you will find the option to create a MySQL database. If you would like to create a MySQL database or add multiple databases to your account, please contact us.

How do I manage MySQL databases?

phpMyAdmin is installed and accessible via the control panel for web based management of databases.

Which hosting account should I choose?

You should choose the hosting account size based on the size of your website. If you are unsure its best to start with the 'Small' account as you can always upgrade at a later date.
